Kelly's Stories
Kelly's stories
Story 1:
When I was in college, I worked at a big bookstore and everyone was required to work on Christmas Eve, or we'd lose our jobs. The store closed at like 10pm, so I had to drive the 5 hours back to Mesquite in the middle of the night. The roads were totally empty because it was the middle of the night on Christmas Eve, so I was driving a little over the speed limit.
Of course, I got pulled over.
The cop asked for my driver's license, registration, etc., and went back to his car for what seemed like forever. When he finally came back, I was sure he was going to give me a fat ticket. Instead, he handed me my stuff back and said, "I'm going to let you off with a warning because I don't wanna piss off the big guy on Christmas eve. But slow down."
I had no idea how he knew, but I didn't question it - just nodded and drove 5 under the rest of the trip. Later I realized that my insurance and registration would have been under Dad's name. My guess is he was in his car calling all his buddies to laugh about it while he let me sweat it out.
Story 2:
When I was a sophomore in high school, my choir director asked me if my Dad could sing. Of course I said yes - Dad had always sung in church choir, and he had a really pretty voice. He thought it would be really sweet if we sang a duet at the big Christmas concert. It was super sweet and super dorky. I wore plaid flannel pajamas and a huge bow in my hair, hugging a big teddy bear, and sang "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" as a little solo, and then Dad walked out on stage in his Santa suit, and announced "It's okay, Kelly - I'm allowed to kiss your Mom because I'm her husband, and my real name is Santa Claus," or something overly-explainy and try-hard like that. (Dad might remember the line.) And then we sang "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" together. I was aware of how silly the whole thing was, but I was a big stage whore, and couldn't pass up TWO songs of my (almost) own on the Christmas concert.
