Our "Office" On the Ship
Let me describe our work area a bit. Our workshop was about the whole width of the ship. Probably about 30 yards wide. We were on the 3rd deck, and below our shop was about 80 feet of storage area that was filled with torpedoes.
There were moveable racks that the weapons were stored upon and they were always strapped into the racks with ratchet belts for when we got into rough seas.

One or two of the junior (green) seaman would climb down into the pit (storage area), move the racks, put lifting straps around the fish to be lifted out for us to work on.
This first trip I was the greenest, so I spent a lot of time in the pit. Not much time working on the fish. That was left to the more senior POs (Petty Officers).
